Main attractions of Tsavo East and Tsavo West

Tsavo is made up of two separate parks, Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park. Located in Coast Province of Kenya in between Nairobi City and Mombasa.

Tsavo is nearly 22,000km2, being the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world. The park was split into two due to the railway going from Mombasa to the interior of Kenya.

MUNDANDA ROCK

The Mudanda Rock, in Tsavo East National Reserve in Kenya, Is an Ancient rock. The Rocky base is composed of wattheure Précambrien bassement rocks, âge 570-4,550 million years old. This massive, whale-backed looking rock is 1.5 kilometres long.

During ancient hunting years, the Waliangulu and the Akamba tribes of Kenya used Mudanda Rock for drying strips of wild hunted meat – mostly elephant meat and other edible animals (it was a way of preserving the meat because fridge was not available) They would Lay the strips on the smooth surface of the rock to dry from the Scorchy sun.

YATTA PLANTEAU

The Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow, runs along the western boundary of the Tsavo East National Park above the Athi River. Its 290 km length was formed by lava from Ol Doinyo Sabuk Mountain.

Basic Accommodations

Main Attraction of Tsavo West

Tsavo West National park and Tsavo East National Park were once a single mega-park, they were separated decades ago, along a line coinciding with the Mombasa highway – and they feel like quite distinct national parks with different eco-systems: the open, flat-to-undulating plains and scattered bush of Tsavo East National Park and the much more wooded, hilly landscapes, dotted with volcanic cones and dramatic, black lava flows, that characterize Tsavo West National Park.

The rugged landscape of Tsavo West is the result of both old and more recent volcanic activity. The park consists of savannah interspersed with open plains, grassland, savannah, mountains, semi-desert, cliffs, and volcanic ridges.

Shetani Lava

Shetani Lava in Swahili loosely translates to “the devil’s lava flow,” aptly named by superstitious locals. It overlooks Chyulu Hills. The flows were formed only a few hundred years ago and local peoples believed that it was the devil himself emerging from the earth.

Mzima springs

It is called Mzima Springs which are a series of four natural springs. It is a stream of crystal-clear water caused by the natural filtration process of the Chyulu Range. The spot was made famous Alan Roots 1983 film Mzima: Portrait of a Spring. He filmed crocodiles and hippos in their underwater lives. Guest normally have a chance to enjoy the guided nature walk with a armed ranger bringing you close to the hippos and crocodiles.

Chaimu Creator or “the devil’s crater” in Kamba tribe language, is a tall rising hill clad in the bright black color of the lava stones.

Severin Safari Camp is in Tsavo West National Park, approximately 250km from Mombasa and Nairobi. From Mtito Andei gate it takes roughly 40 minutes’ drive and there is an airstrip 25 minutes away.

Ngulia safari lodge is in Tsavo West National Park and is roughly 260 kms from Nairobi and can be accessed through Mtito Andei Gate. It is roughly 250 kms from Mombasa and can be accessed through Tsavo River Gate. The lodge is just below Ngulia Hills on the Ndawe Escarpments in Tsavo west.

Amboseli National park

Amboseli National Park is one of the most popular parks in Kenya with breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro (5894m)-Africa’s highest Mountain (in Tanzania). The word Amboseli is a Masai word which means salty dust. This park is centered around Observation Hill, which offers great views of the plains below. Maasai’s live around the park and other than their cattle, Amboseli is home to more than 50 species of mammals and over 400 species of birds.

Attractions of Amboseli National Park

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. On the vast African grasslands, you can see its magnificent scene from far, far away. Mount Kilimanjaro is also the birthplace of several large rivers. Because the mountains are covered with snow all the year round, the melted snow water merges into streams and small rivers. The rivers stream downwards and form a lake in Amboseli-The lake Amboseli hosting many elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and a variety of waterfowl like pelican; Egyptian goose and herds of elephants.

Wildlife big herds roam the dusty plains in the morning and evening. During the day the elephants mostly spend their time partially submerged, foraging in Ol Kenya swamp. Having been protected from poaching for a long time. Other animal found in Amboseli include lion and cheetah, plus herds of zebra, wildebeest, and their predators.

Amboseli observation Hill is the highest point of the park close to lake Amboseli which you can visit, and you can walk out and climb. On top of the hill, you will appreciate the view and seeing flamingoes at the lake plus other animals.
